President John F Kennedy, U S A , is my hero of the adolescence. In those days, we hardly would get to access such speeches or articles as easily as has been made possible by internet today.
Here is his one of the epochal speeches – the speech on the inaugauartion of his Presidency.
We also have an interesting pip at the history, the first of the Kennedy-Nixon debates, which first aired on September 26, 1960 on ABC, NBC, and CBS. with his opponent , Richrd Nixon in the run up to one of the very keenly contested elections to the presidency of USA. With Kennedy as President of America the McCarthyism came to its formal end. JFK laid down an agenda for the world peace by extending an olve branch to the communist camp. Nikita Khrushev in USSR too wanted Kennedy to win.
If you recall about one year before the American presidential elections (which kennedy won) an American spy plane was shot down over the skies of USSR. The pilot Francis Powers was captured alive. It was a big election issue. Richard Nixon, JFK’s Republican rival demanded the pilot’s release. Russia did not budge.
After the election Khruschev and Kennedy met. Khruschev told Kennedy that he (Khruschev) voted for him (kennedy). JFK was surprised. The soviet leader explained that if he had released Francis Powers immediately Nixon would have got upperhand, so they waited till the results of the presidential elections!

It has all the human elements and the end really brings the sense of relief.

The incident narrated by you has had several ramifications in that coldest of cold war era.
Kennedy was known to have dared to call off Kruschev’s bluff by ‘almost’ hitting the “hot line” on the Cuba issue.
I have no idea what kind of different philosophy JFK had or pursued on the economic matters.
But his out-of-the-box approach to the cold war ceratinly used to chill protagonists on both sides. May be, that led to his [quite premature] assaassination.
Whether the US [poltically or economically] would have been substantially different, and for that matter what happened to USSR almost 20 years thereafter would have been accelerated or not do remain interesting if-so scenarios, if he would have had completed his second term.

Yes, Khrushchev had to admit that the world was on the brink of destruction. At that time we did not understand international politics so clearly. I was (and you too) in teens. But, certainly, with Kennedy as the leader of America the world would have been different – for better of course. acouple of bullets fired from Oswald’s gun took revenge on the world. America could never rise to that height again.

Dipak, I held JFK very dear in my teenage heart and entered college as a physics major for the first two years as a result of his challenge for us to land men on the moon by the end of the 60s! I have never regretted my physics studies or my admiration of JFK’s leadership for the youth of that day, especially with forming the Youth Corps, along with his brother-in-law, Sargean Shriver heading up the Peace Corps. We need that idealism and high goal-setting again today, do we not?
Granbee, I agree with you.We have gone too far in other direction. There is a need to bring Idealism back – in the front rows – of our actions and discussions. JFK symbolised that idealism. I was a young student in a small town of Bhuj in the Western India studying in 9th standard. You cannot believe Kennedy’s assasination had left people dazed and shocked.
he brought hope ending the era of suspicion and witch-hunting. Till the time of Clinton Democrats used to have a world agenda. And JFK was the finest product of that era. Obviously, you do not have to regeret for your physics or for you admiration for JFK.

JFK , and for that matter India’s Jawaharlal Nehru were the kind of leaders in the late 50s or early 60s – the period when, incidentally, all of us were of highly impressionable age – who evoked the deep emotion of idealism that spurred individual as well as mass actions.
As we grew older, I did not come across any leader of that stature. probabaly because either our faculty of rational thinking had simultaneously so much developed that a far more stronger emotional stimulus was called for or because the leaders of ensuing periods themselves lacked that quantum and level of authentic idealism.
The strength of impressions created by JFK on people can gauged by the fact that even after the passage of close to 50 years, a small mention of him has drawn people like us, all subsequently grown under as different circumstances as could be possible and having reached an age where we would have had many more emotional [and rational] expereinces to make us not liable to be moved by mere mention of some memory [ good or bad] of the past to move us [so] easily, in to such a lively debate as well as drawing back into that period of time!
