Carnival of Blogs on Golden Era of Hindi Film Music – August 2013

Welcome to August 2013 edition of Carnival of Blogs on Golden Era of Hindi Film Music.

It seems we have a rich fare on dances in this edition.

Dances on Footpath’ remembers month of August for the Independence that India earned on 15t August, 1947 by Ten Favorite Songs and/or Dances from The Year 1947.

‘Dances on Footpath’ also has Five Favorite Dances to the Voice of Rajkumari this month, mostly solos, a couple of great duets, half mujras, half street or theater performances, some on familiar visual terrain and some extremely unusual-looking… but all really good dance sequences from the 1940s or early ’50s, featuring the sweet, unmistakable voice of Rajkumari.

In Vyjayanthimala’s Devadasi Dance in Piya Milan (Choreographed by V.S. Muthuswami Pillai)Minai’s Cinema Nritya Gharana has assembled a vivid analysis and comparison of Devdasi choreography, in the dance song Aaja Kahun Kana   as, different from Bharatnatyam, in Chittoor Rani Padminini dance song by leveraging the Vyjayntimala, the performer and  the choreographer- the hereditary nattuvanar V.S. Muthuswami Pillai, as the common links.

A visit to not-so-regularly-updated blog, ‘A Blog Of My Favourite Vintage Bollywood Stuff’ presents us with Some of my favourite song-dance combinations of the vintage era.

Madhulika Liddle continues to come up with quite interesting themes @ ‘Dusted Off’. We have Ten of my favourite “I am -” songs this month – where the singer introduces himself/herself by name. The “comments” to this post also further enriches the theme.

Dusted Off’’s review of Love in Bombay(2013), – “or 1971, if you go by the year the film was made, not the year the film was released. Or 1974, which was when the censor certificate dates from”, but finally released, in 2013, by sons of Joy Mukherjee after his death – needs a special mention here for the 1971-period songs of Shanker Jaikishan, who had so stunningly teamed up with Joy Mukherjee in “Love in Tokyo” : Maazaa naav ahe Ganpat Rao, Na main boli na woh bola, Saiyyaan saiyyaan,  and Rani Nacho

Shilpi Bose’s ‘Tarun Bose and The World of Cinema’  – Oonche Log (1965)– is an excellent, narrative of the film,  particularly from the point of view of Tarun Bose’s character in the film. Incidentally, “Oonche Log” also takes me back to the days of my first year of college year at Vallabh Vidyanagar (Anand, Gujarat) in 1965-66. We used to hire cycles at ½ a rupee, and make a trip to near-by Anand for a Saturday night show to see the film released on that Friday. We had gone to see Oonche Log for “on-the-screen-histrionic-duel” between Ashok Kumar and Raaj Kumar, but came back highly impressed by the dual bonus of Tarun Bose’s performance and Chitragupt’s music in the film.  Here are those songs to complete that recall:  Jaag Dil-e-Deewana (Mohammad Rafi), Aaja Re Mere Pyaar Ke Raahi Raah Sanvarun Badi Der Se (Mahendra Kapoor and Lata Mangeshkar), Haayere Tere Chanchal Nainwa (Lata Mangeshkar), Kaisi Tune Rit Rachi Bhagwan (Manna Dey and Asha Bhosle).

In Coolone160’s Sadhana- an elegant and timeless actress, we have a playlist that presents the multi-faceted theatrical personality of Sadhana.

We have had opportunity to visit a couple of more blogs this month.

We pick up SAMAY O DHEERE CHALO (Rudali – Asha Bhosle – Bhupen Hazarika – Gulzar) from Mukhtar   Sheikh’s My Vision of the Songs as a first sample. We can look forward to regular visits this blog.

Visit to ‘A Blog Of My Favourite Vintage Bollywood Stuff’ also benefited us by way of these gems: A lovely Mohammed Rafi – Suraiya duet from Sanam (1951) and My favourite Rafi songs.

Songs of Yore has kindly hosted the guest article – Forgotten Composers Unforgettable Melodies (8): Avinash Vyas  – by yours truly, in memory of Avinash Vyas’s anniversary on 20th August.

While presenting Best songs of 1953: Wrap Up 1, AKji has commenced wrapping up the discussions on the different categories for The Best Songs of 1953 @ Songs of Yore. We would take a detailed look at the entire process of review collectively, when we will have all the articles in this series available @ SoY.

Carnival of Quality Management Articles and Blogs – August 2013

Welcome to August 2013 edition of Carnival of Quality Management Articles and Blogs.

It indeed makes a good sense, to keep re-visiting some of the fundamental topics periodically and re-fresh, re-test and re-validate the foundation of our thinking. We begin our journey for the current edition with one of the founding block of Quality – ISO 9001, and the fundamental subject of need and importance of work instruction.

Difference Between Process, Procedures and Work Instructions is that of breadth and depth. A process defines the big picture and highlights the main elements of your business–breadth.  A procedure captures those elements and adds more information for functional responsibilities, objectives, and methods–depth.  Your work instructions fill in more detail for your procedures with detailed specifics–more depth. And since, A work instruction is simply what the name implies, instructions to do work, ISO 9001 clause 7.5.1 work instructions meticulously examines why the clause 7.5.1 of ISO 9001 does not refer to ‘work instruction’.

We have a similar, fundamental, ever-interesting, and extensive discussed and debated topic of Training.

Global State of Quality: Professional Training, on the basis of  ASQ’s Global State of Quality research has some interesting facts on this matter:
# “Organizations that govern quality with a centralized group are roughly 30 percent more likely to provide quality training to staff than organizations where a senior executive governs the quality process”.

And

# The research also shows that “the majority of organizations have a fairly narrow training scope by providing quality-related training to staff directly involved in the quality process. Only a handful of organizations provide quality training to all staff”

Is it because the training is perceived more as and end that meets ISO 9001 Training Requirements, and is not being very creatively as tool that can, at the minimum,  go long way in retaining the interest of an employee in the work, and at a higher level can be a great tool for the employee engagement.?

A happy (retained) employee and their voluntary engagement would work volumes in so far as all round aspects Quality – of goods & services, service to customers, care of other stakeholder’s interests and the work environment  are concerned.

The two quotes mentioned in Tim McMahon’s  The Worst Waste of All: Lack of Employee Involvement  aptly sum the message of the article – Thinking you can’t is the worst form of waste because it thwarts your tackling the other, more-familiar forms of waste – : Henry Ford probably said it best when he noted, “You can think you can achieve something or you can think you can’t and you will be right.”. AND “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure…than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” – Theodore Roosevelt.

In this regards, Nicole Radziwill in her blog Quality and Innovation , aiming to explore “quality and productivity & innovation in socio-technical systems, presents “unique quality orientation” at Max’s in Making Quality Standards a Collaborative Game the service staff and the customer!

That also reminded me to search for some concise material on “Mumbai’s Dabbawala”’s  as an example of the all-round qualitative benefits of the engagement of the people in their work.  Among several excellent presentations available on Slide Share, we take  a look at one representative presentation – The Wonder of Mumbai Dabbawalas.- by Targetseo’s Paavan Solanki.

If the Quality professional think why have been talking of such a fundamental people issue on A Carnival of Quality Management articles, a visit to Tanmay Vora’s SHRM Top 20 Indian HR Influencers Active on Social Media 2013, wherein he talks about the challenge for those who wish to make a difference is to generate influence and reaffirms his belief: Excellence is a product of leading people well and every manager, in that sense, is an HR Manager. Building a culture of excellence is not just a departmental job of HR, it is everybody’s job. And to further buttress the point, we have his recognition as #3 in “Top 20 Indian HR Influencers Active on Social Media 2013”’

Indeed, an occasion to celebrate for all Quality professionals, and to heartily felicitate Mr. Tanmay Vora for practicing his deep-rooted fundamental beliefs as a true Quality Professional  and commitments to the basic values of Quality profession.

Dan Rockwell, in How to Get What You Want presents us one more fundamental aspect that also is  well applicable to the practices of Quality Thinking, when he states that to get(ing) what you want, do give what you want.

We will continue drawing inspirations for our ‘fellow’ disciplines.

Seth Godin – Marketing driven or Market driven?  – succinctly underlines the issue that “there are organizations driven by Sales, by Shareholder Relations and by Operations and Tech too. Even a few, those seem to be run by the Employee-happiness Department. Not many, though. Even in these organizations, the option remains: you can be market driven instead. The first step is to choose your market…”.

No thorough-bred Quality Professional would deny the importance of sustained competitive advantage that can accrue from the customer-orientation in its true form!

Rajesh Setty’s ‘The most MEANINGFUL competitive advantage’ emphatically underscores “the ability to scale   your [and, the quality professional’s as well] ability to care, because so many people out there pretend to care.

That (ability to care) is also emphasized by Vineet Nayar [HCL Technologies] in his article Three Differences Between Managers and Leaders, wherein he has provided three simple tests to find out when [the {quality} professional] has “crossed over from being a manager to a leader:

  •   Counting Value vs. Creating Value
  •   Circles of Power vs. Circles of Influence
  •   Managing Work vs. Leading People

Mark Netzel, Quality Director at J.B. Stamping Inc., Cleveland/Akro recommends us link to Report of the PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident , which “is a Good article on root cause investigation of the space shuttle explosion years ago.”  The detailed report of the exhaustive hearings is followed by “Actions to Implement the Recommendations of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle  Challenger Accident” and “IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS  of the Presidential Commission on the Space Shuttle Challenger Accident”.
Now we turn on to our ‘regular’ sections.

Books, those bound paper documents, are part of an ecosystem, one that was perfect, and one that is dying, quickly.

“THE BOOKSTORE as we know it is doomed,…..The death of the bookstore is being caused by the migration to ebooks (it won’t take all books to become ‘e’, just enough to tip the scale) as well as the superior alternative of purchase and selection of books online.

Any single change happening in the world of “read-books” may not “kill a venerable information delivery and cultural touchstone like the book. But all of them together? “

I called this post, “An end” as opposed to “the end.” As always, we’ll reinvent. We still need ideas, and ideas need containers. We’ve developed more and more ways for those ideas to travel and to have impact, and now it’s up to us to figure out how to build an ecosystem around them.”

Web Gurjari Spreads Wings…..

Web Gurjari idea was conceived as a platform to bring all “GUJARATI” writing and reading netizens under one roof so as to help Gujaratis shed their inertia

–  To use Gujarati language, in all natural modes of communication among Gujarati-speaking communities;

–   To promote the culture of using the Gujarati language, inherently, even in their own professions

thereby protecting Gujarati language from being an Endangered Language.

Initially, Web Gurjari evolved as Gujarati Language and Literature blog. The blog operates on voluntary active contribution and collaboration of its members.

And now, Web Gurjari is poised to spread its wings in new directions, too.

“સાંપ્રત મેનેજમેન્ટ વિશ્વ [Contemporary Management World]  is the Top-Level Title of the new Chapter added to Web Gurjari.

Web Gurjari’s “સાંપ્રત મેનેજમેન્ટ વિશ્વ [Contemporary Management World]” aims to bring the coded knowledge of the’ Science and Art of the Modern Management Theories and Practice’ under one Gujarati roof.

Typically, the world “management” connotes Business (and Industrial) Management.  Hence “સાંપ્રત મેનેજમેન્ટ વિશ્વ [Contemporary Management World]” is likely to have to more of the concepts, literature and discussions from the world of Business Management. However, “management” is, consciously or unconsciously, intertwined in all walks of the modern life. It may have been documented as Management Literature in the books, magazines, newspapers or blogs and websites. It may have remained implicit in the lessons of the history or in the realms of folklores and mythology.  It remains embedded in the lives of the legends. “સાંપ્રત મેનેજમેન્ટ વિશ્વ [Contemporary Management World]”will, therefore,  provide the common platform for sharing all these aspects and forms of ‘Experiments of Management’, thereby providing not only a multi-faceted source of the knowledge to the practicing professionals, but also adding the much needed depth and variety to the fare to the burgeoning tribe of ‘common’ visitors to Web Gurjari.
