Welcome to July, 2015 edition of Carnival of Blogs on Golden Era of Hindi Film Music.

As always we begin with posts dedicated to tributes.

How the groovy saxophonist Manohari Singh helped redefine Hindi film musicRudradeep Bhattacharjee – Known for his solo in the super-hit ‘Satta Bazaar’, he was an important figure during the golden era of Hindi film music. It’s his fifth death anniversary on 13th July 2015. SD Burman asked him to play for the background score of ‘Sitaron Se Aage’ (1958) and then in his subsequent films. Some of vary famous pieces:

Sanjeev Kumar was one of those few actor-stars to whom the role meant more than anything in the world…..he chose to tread the path set down by other actor-stars such as Motilal and Balraj Sahni and rewrote many of the conventions of Bollywood rather than follow the conventional star system.

Naushad’s exceptional Mukesh – a tribute on Mukesh’s 92nd birth anniversary (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976) – presents 10 gems from 26 songs that Naushad composed in all with Mukesh.

My favourite songs with the word ‘Badal/ Badra’ is a list of 10 songs that have the words badal or badra or badarva in the first line of the song and not a ‘My favourite Cloud Songs‘ post because I have left out songs with megha and ghata. We have picked two songs here:

Wedding Songs – And Beyond incorporates various elements that lead up to a wedding and its aftermath.

Arun Kumar Deshmukh’s Ik din tumne kahaa thha ji has a very high-octane prologue that so excellently pays tribute to according to one estimate, at least 1000 Music Directors, who gave music to just one film and disappeared. Welcome to July 2015 edition of Carnival of Quality Management Articles and Blogs.

The search for “Improving measures of measurement of process” took us to the first building block -‘performance measures and metrics’, followed by the search for resources relating to the ‘structuring for the process of improvement’. We now take one more step forward and look for some basics to search for “Deploying the Improvement Process”.

Techniques and lessons for improvement of deployment processes – the article would appear to be non-fitting jig-saw piece in the ‘Deploying the Improvement Process, puzzle. The article aims to make (software) deployment processes reproducible and reliable. It presents a number of interesting techniques and lessons that could improve the deployment process of a system, and hence our interest in the article.

1. Deal with the deployment complexity from the beginning in your development process

2. Make your deployment process script-able

3. Decompose your system and their build processes, for the following reasons:

    1. It may significantly reduce build times, because only components that have been changed have to be rebuilt. There is no need to re-examine the complete codebase for each change.
    2. It increases flexibility, because it becomes easier to replace specific parts of a system with other variants.
    3. It allows a better means of sharing components across systems and better integration in different environments. As I have stressed out in an earlier blog post, software nowadays is rarely self-contained and run in many types of environments.
    4. It allows you to perform builds faster, because they can be performed in parallel.

It is time to analyze if the right people are doing the right things, but in the wrong way.  But when a process may be off-track and requires evaluation, seize a modest tool called a Deployment Chart created by quality guru Dr. W. Edwards Deming.  The Deployment Chart is a flowcharting mechanism which allows you to inspect a process and apprehend the numerous relationships different people in the process have to the tasks and to each other……. An examination of our completed Deployment Chart will show us whether we have a smooth flowing process that makes sense.  Often times the Deployment Chart will display a process containing multiple hand-offs back and forth between people, or worse, between departments.  The matrix will highlight where “the ball will be dropped” and where departmental walls have the potential to block and delay the process.  You will also be able to identify unfortunate scenarios where two people who are required to be associated and connected with a particular part of the process are entirely detached and removed from each other in the process structure.

In the preceding posts we listened to solo songs of Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Mohammad Rafi and G M Durrani respectively, as part of our journey through the Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?.

These songs cover a substantial share of male solo songs for the year.

In the present post, we will cover, what can be called as fringe players, in so far as the year 1950 is concerned.


C Ramchandra who sang under the pseudonym of Chitalkar only under his own baton, has songs under Husnlal Bhagatram and Hanuman Prasad (Apni Chhaya) and under P Ramakant (as Annasaheb). Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh states that P Ramakant was C Ramchandra’s music composer, like Chic Chocolate. So there must have been some compelling reason for this subterfuge. For our purpose, these trivia only add a piece of information only.

In the preceding posts we listened to solo songs of Mukesh, Talat Mahmood and Mohammad Rafi respectively, as part of our journey through the Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?.

Our expanded search has yielded, in fact not so surprisingly, almost comparable number of solo songs by another vintage era stalwart – G M Durrani. Quite talented and as widely accepted, G M Durrani must remain one of the most underrated artist in the world of Hindi Film Music.  He was well –noticed, found place always in the first row and yet seems to always have missed the hall of fame by a few whiskers when compared to his contemporaries like Rafi, Talat or Mukesh. The accolades that he got were relatively faint enough to get obliterated very fast in the rising tides of his peers in the 50s.

In the preceding two posts we listened to solo songs of Mukesh and Talat Mahmood, respectively, in the previous episodes, as part of our journey through the Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?.

We now take up Mohammad Rafi. As may be observed form the list of Memorable Songs, apparently, Mohammad Rafi has yet to get the firm grip over the industry. The Memorable Songs lists only one of his songs, which even though did notch good numbers, would probably may not figure in the best of Khayyam’s Mohammad Rafi songs.

Our expanded search has yielded a fairly diverse bouquet of Music Directors with whom he has worked in this year. Obviously, some of his duets (Dastan- Naushad) seem to score more points in terms of popularity.

We listened to Mukesh’s solo songs in our last episodeas part of our journey through the Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?.

We would now pick solo songs of Talat Mahmood.

Talat Mahmood had two great films – Arzoo (Anil Biswas) and Babul (Naushad) this year. With so much astounding commercial success, it was quite ironical that Talat Mahmood had a very short association with Anil Biswas and with Naushad Babul was the only one. They did one more song a good 18 years later (Aadmi- 1968 – Kaisi Haseen Ye Baharon Ki Raat Hai) which also got overturned in the final take !

We now take up another major category – Male Solo Songs – during our journey of the review of Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?’.

The first scrutiny of the List of Memorable Songs shows relatively less strong presence of Male Solo Songs. So go back to the basics and pick up Hindi Film Geet Kosh to make the universe of our current micro-review wide enough. It does primarily help to listen to as many songs as are available on YT, thereby get a far better feel of the topic under discussion. As a bonus, you get to listen to many songs that have simply remained unnoticed.

The exercise is certainly worth every grain of efforts that it called for. The expanded list gave a wonderful opportunity to listen to several music directors now relegated to very deep grey of the oblivion, some very bold experiments and, of course, listening to many unheard songs of Ghulam Mustafa Durrani (aka G M Durrani).

We continue our take with songs by Other Leading Female Playback Singers during our micro-revisit of the  Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?. In the previous posts, we listened to memorable songs of 1950 from two of the prominent singers – Suraiya and Shamshad Begum. In this post, we will take up some of the memorable songs of other front ranking female playback singer of that era – Raj Kumari and Geeta Dutt. We will also take up three songs that remain isolated cases, but merit no less attention and accolades, in the List of Memorable Songs.

Raj Kumari

Qualitatively, only Baware Nain would have sufficed for Raj Kumari to hold her ground in the competitive era of Hindi Film Music. Her overall share in the year was, in any case, not insignificant.
