Welcome to August, 2015 edition of Carnival of Blogs on Golden Era of Hindi Film Music.

This month we had a flurry of article on anniversary of a different kind – the 40th year of Sholay. From the deluge of articles, we have picked illustrative few here:

‘Sholay’ is 40 – but so are a bunch of other classic Hindi movies – Apart from the classic Ramesh Sippy entertainer, ‘Nishant’, ‘Deewar’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Choti Si Baat’, Rafoo Chakkar/Khel Khel Mein and Mausam are also four decades old.

Naushad’s Long-distance Duets of Separation has presented Naushad’s Long Distance Duets of Separation, as a tribute to him in this year being celebrated as Year of Naushad on SoY.

The Master of Masters Khemchand Prakash is a tribute on his 65th death anniversary (12 December 1907 – 10 August 1950).

C Ramchandra-Naushad comparison and contrast with Rafi, a tribute to Mohammad Rafi on his 35th death anniversary, in a way also can well be placed in our regular section of Special Songs (/articles)……… Rafi started with Naushad in 1944 with Pahle Aap, and with CR two years later with Safar. Yet if you count their songs till 1949, Rafi had about 20 songs with CR, as compared to about 15 with Naushad. Each composed 10 songs for Rafi (in 1949), but Naushad takes a huge leap in terms of quality and impact…1950 onwards or more precisely 1951 (Deedar) onwards, Naushad zooms off in a different orbit with his Rafi songs…CR plods on, composing about 65 songs for Rafi (not a small number), compared to about 150 by Naushad.

Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Ke Se is a tribute to Hemlata on her 61st birth anniversary on 16th August, 2015.

From the review of Roop ki Rani Choron ko Raja (1961), we pick up Chaand Gaya taare gaye…Jaaona Sata na rasiya and an extended semi-classical performance to Shiv Sagar, set to the tune that S-J used later in this song from Rangoli (1962)!

Ten of My Favorite Jeep Songs is a follow up post to the earlier one on car songs. Here are some of the rarely heard songs from this collection:

From MUSINGS , we pick up Men in Her Life and the related articles. Men in Her Life sets to explore the men in Nutan’s screen life, excluding Rajnish and Mohnish (Bahl). There had been as many as 45 men with whom she had affair. From the statistical overview, the second follow-up article’s Romancing statistics shows 47 movies and 50 exchanges of hearts with 23 men. Next is on scandalous relationships – Jocasta? . If Jocasta was taking the relationship links vertically, then Awan (sister /wife of Cain) scorches the horizontal wanderings. We had missed Short Notes : The Beautiful Shiva, which ought to have been presented in our June 2015 issue. The visuals presented here are  (an) humble tribute to those great creators of art. (We) would like the creations do the talking, hence no accompanying commentary to the selections.

Whilst not directly within the scope of our blog carnival, it would be interesting to digress a bit and take note of – Age cannot wither them (or can it?) – thoughts on actors “playing” old. The post picks up the thread from Amitabh Bachchan enacting Bhaskor Banerjee in Piku to him pretend to be old in 1980s films like Mahaan or Aakhree Raasta. In the end, we have (our customary) very special songs of Mohammad Rafi taken out from the songs Samir Dholakia has referred.

In Dil Ki Baazi Jeet Ke Bhi Haare Sudhir states that he heard this song for for the first time and then listened to it several times over. Here is the song – Dil Ki Baazi Jeet Ke Bhi Haare – Madan Manjari (1961) – Sardar Malik.

Then we took one more step forward, so as to look at some basics for “Deploying the Improvement Process”.

Presently, we will explore different ideas and approaches in “Implementing the Improvement Process”.

Steps in the Continuous Improvement Process’ recommends the classic PDCA approach

6 Tips for Implementing Continuous Process Improvement : Continuous process improvement stops you from getting comfortable with the status quo and accepting sub-par results. Six tips that it enlists for successful implementation of continuous improvement process are:

How to implement Change Successfully has ‘change’ as the keyword in the title. We have used the article here simply because any change has to lead to improvement and every improvement, at the minimum, results in change. The article revolves around three basics: –

As we search for more literature on the subject, we observe a wide range of universe of from basic common sense approach to highly developed, technology-enabled processes using several tools. As a result, we are led to conclude that successful implementation of the CI process calls for continuous learning from each of the experiences and build the learnings into the future stages of the implementation.

We would continue our journey of the process of improvement for three more months.

The author has picked up “the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society’ to define the term ‘Culture’.  And then, in the process of answering the question ‘Is it possible to manage behaviors and influence performance?’ he lists following “Not To Do” actions:

  1. Jumping up and down on poor performance.
  2. Challenging management information
  3. Changing the calculations
  4. Blaming and shaming
  5. Always create more metrics until something positive can be identified for emphasis
  6. Minimizing the negative

He goes on to conclude that “performance management” doesn’t create a culture of high performance. It creates one of low performance and fear. (Therefore), The way to create a high performance culture is to seek out poor performance, embrace it and fix it, not punish it.

Julia McIntosh, ASQ communications in July Roundup: Using New Technology in Quality and Beyond sums up how the ASQ bloggers have reflected on the way technology helps them as quality professionals—both at work and beyond..

The Micro View of The Best Songs of 1950 @ Songs of Yore – Male Female Duets : Mukesh with other female singers

The third major category, in our journey of the review of Best songs of 1950: And the winners are?’ is Duets. A Duet would mean a song which has two singers – which can be a male and female singer or a male and male or a female and a female singer. Our Hindi Films have all these varieties. Moreover, two male and a female or one male and two female (these generally have chorus in accompaniment, too) Triads, and some times even quadrats, also can seen.

When we take a very close look at all the songs of 1950, we get many examples of each of such sub-variation of duets. We will list them separately – for ease of listening and for future references.

Adieu to (S T) Parikh saheb

Shri S T (Shrish Trilokchandra) Parikh’s long, live; vigil came to an end on 31st July 2015. His own fairly chronic illness, his wife (Surkhabhabhi)’s critical ill-health and her parting the long company last year also did not affect his ever so equanimous, take-each-event-of-the-life-as-it-happens approach to his life.

Whenever I met or talked to him in last three / four years, this was one more facet of his personality that I did observe. In fact it is a plus to many qualities of his personality that I would reel off. When I talked to him last week and promised to meet soon enough, his tone and tenor were, as-ever, so balanced – without any rancor – and pleasant enough. In the hindsight now, I so much regret that I took his so strongly positive attitude towards life as as-is-usual-well signal and not took up my inner urge to visit him there and then.

In fact, I now so clearly recollect that even during our period together at Gujarat Steel Tubes (1973 to 1979), he had never complained of things that he would be involved with, things that no one in the organization would (or could handle), things that would keep life not smooth for even a short period. He would approach all such unexpected trouble-monger events with his, as-usual, cool and calm analytical approach, observe the event and the happenings under – or behind – such events minutely and formulate a decision objectively. Most of the decisions would appear to be out-of-box ones to the others. This invariably called for a great amount of convincing to all, but he would approach each discussion with same vigor and meticulousness, without any trace of exasperation, or for that matter, even frustration, which any other human being, in the similar circumstances, would (sometimes) feel.

For me, personally, the loss is quite profound. That he was one single person who made me what I professionally am can be called THE understatement of my life. When I reflect, I can so vividly see how painstaking and loving he was in those formative years of mine at Gujarat Steel Tubes.

He would give me a set of figures of allocation of steel and ask to me to tabulate them. Initially, I would invariably make some error in my totaling up. He would very gently show those mistakes while explaining the pattern of allocation among the different steel tube manufacturers as well its implications for GST in particular and the Steel Tube Industry in general. It was his way of directing me to take care of very small details while giving me the benefit of his expertise in the macro analysis of the Steel Industry.

For every new task that he would choose to entrust me, he would make sure that I certainly knew of the unspoken backing of his position in the company but also subtly made sure to the concerned outside world also would know it too that I carried his confidence, and hence his authority.

He chose to invest his confidence in me, and then went all the way. I feel happy that I have been able to repay his efforts, to some degree, in turn by helping careers of several of my colleagues.

I can fill millions of bytes to recollect such seemingly very insignificant, but so ever vital events that helped build the foundation of my career.

He was a natural network builder. This was one quality of his that just did not permeate through the filters of my own personality. Almost all these years, it was, invariably, he who would call me up at fairly regular interval, even when I inveterately failed to take the next call first.

He was always a low-key player, never played his own drum and hardly cared whether someone would take cognizance of his contribution(s).

Well everything that begins has to end. So does a great life that may never get the due that so much was deserved, in so many words. But, Parikh saheb always took such things in his stride, and still never missed a beat in the rhythm of his life.
